Design Commission approves PSU Viking Pavilion (images)

The Design Commission has approved designs for a remodel of the Portland State University Peter Stott center, which will include the creation of the new Viking Pavilion. The project by Woofter ArchitectureSink Combs Dethlefs Architects and Lango Hansen Landscape Architects will create a new multi-purpose arena with seating for 3,400 people in the heart of the PSU Campus. As reported in March of last year, the building will also be used by OHSU, who are contributing part of the funding. Other functions to be located in the building include new classroom space, offices, a cafe and a student lounge. 62 short-term bike parking spaces will be provided. No vehicular parking is proposed.

Mixed income development on Riverplace Parcel 3 has first Design Advice hearing (images)

A mixed income development on Riveplace Parcel 3 has gone before the Design Commission for its first Design Advice hearing. The project by Ankrom Moisan Architects will include two buildings: a 14 story west building with 209 units of affordable housing; and a 6 story east building with 162 units of market rate housing. The project is being jointly developed by San Francisco based affordable housing provider BRIDGE Housing and Portland based Williams & Dame. The landscape architects are Lango Hansen.

The ground floor of the east building will include 12,880 sq ft of retail space, which could be occupied by a neighborhood scale grocer. The east building will also contain 16,460 sq ft of “maker space”. Vehicular parking will be shared between the two buildings, with 163 spaces provided for the residents and 39 spaces for the retail spaces. Over 500 bicycle parking spaces will be provided.

Under Construction: The Porter hotel (images)

Construction is underway on The Porter, a 299-room hotel in downtown Portland. The Porter is planned as part of Hilton’s Curio Collection, a brand launched in 2014 for independently-owned four- to five-star hotels. The developer of the project is The Widewaters Group, with design work by HC Architecture of Atlanta. According to the developer Level 16 of the building “will feature a high-end restaurant and lounge with large, covered outdoor terraces with spectacular views of the city.”

Design Commission approves 15 story building at 4th & Harrison (images)

The Design Commission has approved a 15-story mixed-use development at 4th & Harrison, after four Design Advice hearings and two Design Review hearings.  The 175’ tall building will provide 424 residential units, with a mix of studio, one, two and three bedroom apartments. At the ground level a 33,000 sq ft supermarket is planned, as well as an additional 5,000 sq ft retail space. 208 vehicular parking spaces are proposed, split between 137 spaces for the residents, and 71 for the supermarket / retail uses. An optional 4th parking level would provide an additional 80 spaces. The building will include 656 long term bicycle parking spaces.

The project is being developed by Chicago based developer Core Spaces. The design architects for the building are Hartshorne Plunkard Architecture of Chicago, with Portland based Myhre Group Architects acting as consulting architects. The landscape design is by Portland based Lango Hansen.

Multnomah County Board of Commissioners see first designs for new Courthouse (images)

The Multnomah County Board of Commissioners has been presented with early designs for the new Multnomah County Courthouse. The 17 story, $300 million project will replace the existing courthouse on SW 4th Avenue, which is considered seismically unsound and no longer fit for use. The architects for the project are Portland based SRG Partnership and New York based CGL RicciGreene. The landscape architects are PLACE.

A proposal for a 6 story building at SW 12th Ave & Morrison St has gone before the Design Commission for its first Design Review hearing. The 58,862 sq ft project would include ground floor retail with 5 floors of office space above. No vehicular parking is proposed. The architects for the building are Design Department, working with LRS Architects. The developers of the project are Menashe Properties and North Rim Development.

Design Commission offers advice for 3rd and Taylor (images)

Ankrom Moisan Architects have gone before the Design Commission with proposals for a nearly full block development at SW 3rd and Taylor. The project for Onder Development would include a 20 story hotel building on the southern half of the block and a 10 story office building on the northern half of the block. The potential loss of two historic buildings on the site has brought significant attention to the project, including a mention by the Historic Landmarks Commission during their State of the City Presevation Report to the City Council last week.

Broadway Tower goes before Design Commission for advice (images)

GBD Architects have presented their proposed Broadway Tower to the Design Commission at an optional Design Advice Request hearing. The project by developer BPM Real Estate Group will include 170 hotel rooms on 7 floors of the 269′-8″ tall building. Located above the hotel will be 11 office floors, with 200,000 gross sq ft of space. A retail unit will be located at the corner of SW Broadway and Clay St. 320 parking spaces would be provided in 4 levels of underground parking. Roof decks will be provided at levels 17, 18 and 19.
