Public Market Community Open House this Saturday

A Community Open House for the planned James Beard Public Market will take place this Saturday, December 13th at OMSI, from 2pm – 5pm. As was first reported in Portland Monthly, the design of the building is being led by Norwegian architects Snøhetta. The market is proposed for land at the Morrison Bridge Head, currently owned by Multnomah County. The county agreed in 2012 to sell the land to a group including the Public Market Foundation and Melvin Mark Development. The Foundation intends to build a daily, year-round, indoor-outdoor marketplace, which would include 50 permanent vendors, 40 day tables, full-service restaurants, a teaching kitchen and an event space.

The open house will be an opportunity to meet the design team, share ideas, and influence the design. There will be a presentation at 2:30 PM by the architects, the Market’s non-profit foundation, and Mayor Hales. The event is free to the public, and children are welcome.

12|Stark under construction in the West End (images)

12|Stark will be latest addition to Downtown’s West End, which has seen an explosion in retail in recent years. The 1918 building is currently undergoing a major transformation, which includes a seismic upgrade. The project will see the building’s ground floor change from an office use to retail, and will potentially include a roof terrace. As reported by Samantha Bakall in the Oregonian, Bamboo Sushi will open the second branch of its sister restaurant Bamboo Izakaya. Other tenants will include Kure Juice bar and Timbuk2. Two spaces remain available. The project is scheduled for completion in 2015.

Park Avenue West (images)

Anyone who has been near Downtown Portland lately will have noticed the construction of Park Avenue West, a 30 story building rising adjacent to Director Park. The project is the third skyscraper built by TMT Development, whose founder Tom Moyer passed away last week at the age of 95. Previous projects included the 1000 Broadway building, which was completed in 1991, and the Fox Tower, which was completed in 2000.

The tower, designed by TVA Architects, rises to 460′ — the maximum height allowed Downtown by Portland’s zoning code. A spire extends the total height to 501′-7″. The lower two floors will be retail, and the next 15 floors are residential, with 211 apartments. The top 13 floors are offices, whose anchor tenant will be law firm Stoel Rives. The building will be served by 6 levels of underground parking.

Rendering EAST SIDE VIKING PAVILION

2012 rendering of the PSU Viking Pavilion

The Oregonian reported Wednesday that Portland State University Head Football Coach Nigel Burton’s contract is being terminated. Included in the story was the following statement from PSU President Wim Wiewel:

“We’ll soon be hiring a new athletic director who will decide on a permanent head coach and start construction on our new Viking Pavilion Athletic and educational building.”

The proposed Viking Pavilion will be located on the South Park Blocks, at the location of the existing Peter W. Stott Center.

Hotel Cornelius, back from the dead

As recently as mid-2013, Downtown Portland’s historic—and long vacant—Hotel Cornelius was under threat of demolition by its then owners, TMT. Fortunately the building was sold to Arthur Mutal, a developer with a growing portfolio of adaptive reuse projects. At the time of the sale they were still considering their options for the property, which included “multifamily housing and creative offices”, as reported in the Oregonian.
