Construction has wrapped up on the PSU Viking Pavilion

In a 3-2 vote the City Council re-opened the door for approval of the Fremont Place Apartments, according to the Oregonian.  The Northwest Examiner asked why the issue was all about protecting views of the Fremont Bridge… until it was not?

The Business Tribune reported that the Bridgetown Lofts have been sold to Madison Park Financial Corporation for $55 million.

The facility would include environmental education activities, a wildlife hospital, offices, interpretive center, outdoor caging for wildlife and a nature store. It would also include housing staff onsite. They want to ensure that they fully understand what would be allowed at each of these properties.

Current code (no change to site): Construction of new multi-family, 11 unit residential development (approximately 10,850 sq ft). The building program is arranged into two 4-story bars that step downhill along with the slope of the site. The upper bar will be 4 stories of residential and the lower bar will be 3 stories of residential over 1 level of utility, storage, and parking. Stormwater will be retained onsite with a planter at the south and a basin at the north. Infiltration is not feasible onsite due to the slope, so the planters will be piped to the combined storm/sewer pipe running beneath 11th Ave.

Weekly Roundup: Canopy Hotel, Fremont Place, 5 MLK, and more

Canopy Hotel

A new restaurant named Canopy will open this May in the ZGF Architects designed Canopy Hotel.

Pearl District residents turned out at city council in an attempt to block the Fremont Place Apartmentswrites the Oregonian. The Willamette Week reported that a former president of the Pearl District Neighborhood Association warned that if efforts to block housing are successful the neighborhood “could become an urban gated community for the landed class.”

The Portland Mercury reported that the Canopy Restaurant will open this May in the Pearl District Canopy Hotel.

The Daily Journal of Commerce reported on the demolition of the old OHSU School of Dentistry, which is being torn down with “Jurassic flair“*. The building will be replaced by the new OHSU Elk’s Children Eye Clinic.

The Portland Mercury reported that the decades old Chinese Village restaurant has closed its kitchen. A 20,480 square feet grocery store proposed for the site at 520 SE 82nd Ave was recently submitted for building permit review.

The Daily Journal of Commerce published photos of the demolition of the old Fishels Furniture building. It is being torn down to make way for the 5 MLK development.

Architect and City Council Candidate Stuart Emmons is “angling for the anti-development vote in Portland”, according to the Willamette Week.

Construction is underway on Works Progress Architecture’s Flatiron Building

The DJC published photos of Flatiron, the under construction office building at N Mississippi & Cook whose shape is “reminiscent of the iconic Flatiron Building in New York City“.

Portland Architecture wrote about two proposals for two developments with buildings far taller than currently allowed: Kengo Kuma’s Riverplace Redevelopment; and the William Kaven proposal for the Post Office Redevelopment.

The Oregonian reported that Oregon State University will occupy the second floor of the re-purposed Meier & Frank Building.

The Business Tribune reported that Portland-based ZGF Architects was named the #1 ranked firm for sustainability in the nation by Architect magazine.

The Design Commission has approved two options for a building at 1732 NE 2nd Ave. The project by Works Progress Architecture will be either 6 or 9 stories tall, and will be constructed out of pre-fabricated modular units. Both options would include approximately 10,000 sq ft of double-sided ground floor retail, facing both NE Schuyler a new mid-block pedestrian only alley.
